TWISTED SISTERS - TEXAS

TWISTED SISTERS - TEXAS

Texas

If you have always thought of Texas as a flat country with strictly straight roads, the Twisted Sisters ride will change your mind and keep you wanting to come back. The Twisted Sisters are the three Hill Country Ranch Roads -- TX 335, TX 336, and TX 337 -- equally beloved by local and visiting motorcyclists alike. These three roads form an exciting loop ride following canyons and hills and offering so many incredible twists and turns you may want to ride this motorcycle route twice.

Be forewarned that some of the blind curves are unexpectedly sharp, making you feel like you’ve been snapped by a slingshot. Have fun, yet ride with caution as this is purely ranch country. There are cattle guards in between ranches, not to mention free-range cattle and deer. Plus there might be ranchers moving slowly in their pickups.

Before you take a spin on the Sisters, fill your tank up as gas stations are few and far between along the route. The temperatures in Texas can get hot hot hot, so pack your swimsuit for this ride because there are several swimming holes along the way.

Here’s what to expect on the Twisted Sisters ride.

Medina

The starting point of the route is Medina, where locals advise you to fill up with gas and have a hearty breakfast at Keese’s Café and Bar-B-Que. The eatery sells T-Shirts saying “A Serious Ride Requires a Serious Breakfast”, and their eggs and pancakes are especially tasty.

From Medina, jump on the first Sister, TX 337, and ride towards Leaky. This road will take you past beautiful Texan ranches and begin to twist and turn in long, sweeping curves. Do not lose focus, however, as some of those sweepers might suddenly decrease in radius throwing riders off balance.

In twenty miles there will be an intersection at Vanderpool. If you have the time, take Route 187 and do a quick detour to the Lone Star Motorcycle Museum, a small but curious place featuring over sixty motorcycles. Owned by an Australian immigrant Allan and his wife Debbie, the Lone Star Motorcycle Museum is a favorite bikers’ hangout along the way.

Leaky

Past Vanderpool, TX 337 will throw some more fun twists at you before leading into the town of Leaky. Top off your tank here and visit Frio Canyon Motorcycle Stop, another popular motorcycle hangout on the route.  Bent Rim Grill offers some great lunch options, and you can go for a quick swim in the Frio River – just know that “frio” means “cold” in Spanish.

From Leaky, take the second Sister, TX 336, North. The turns here are more predictable and more scenic. Use caution as there are no cattle fences here and livestock is free-range, which means the road is part of their pasture. This is also whitetail deer country as well as wild pig country, so be vigilant as you twist that throttle.

Camp Wood

TX 336 will intersect with Route 41 at Leaky Independent School District. Ride Route 41 West until it meets the third Sister, TX 335, and follow it South towards Barksdale and Camp Wood. More scenic vistas and thrilling curves and bends of the road await, and when you reach Camp Wood, you can grab a bite to eat at Two Fat Boys before heading back to Medina.

Texas is famous for its friendly and chatty locals, and you’re sure to experience Texan hospitality on this trip. As you ride the Sisters, you may notice a photographer snapping pictures next to a Honda Goldwing motorcycle. If you’d like to purchase a high-quality photo of yourself traveling the Sisters, check the TX Moto Foto website and see if they caught you on camera.
